On the Performance of Different Empirical Loss Equations for Flow Through Coarse Porous Media (RESEARCH NOTE)

نویسنده

چکیده مقاله:

In this paper, the empirical equations that estimate hydraulic parameters for non-linear flow through coarse porous media are evaluated using a series of independent data collected in the laboratory. In this regard, three different relatively uniform soils ranging in size from 8.5 to 27.6 mm have been selected and three random samples drawn from each material. The physical characteristics such as size distribution, porosity, and shape factor have been measured for the 9 samples. In total, 9 permeameter tests have been conducted on the samples to create a set of reliable hydraulic gradientvs. bulk velocity data. Statistical measures have been used to compare the permeameter data with those predicted by the empirical equations. The study shows that McCorquodale et al. and Stephenson equations, which some subjective parameters related to the surface characters of the material, have been incorporated in their structures, can give good results. Also, equation developed by Adel who considers d15 as characteristic size of the media, shows acceptable performance. Other equations either underestimate or overestimate hydraulic gradient based on experimental work and analysis conducted in this study.

An experimental study on hydraulic behavior of free-surface radial flow in coarse-grained porous media

The equations of fluids in porous media are very useful in designing the rockfill and diversion dams, gabions, breakwaters and ground water reserves. Researches have been showed that the Forchheimer equation is not sufficient for the analysis of hydraulic behavior of free-surface radial flows; because, in these flows, in addition to the hydraulic gradient and velocity, the variable of radius is...

Experimental Investigation of the Permeability and Inertial Effect on Fluid Flow through Homogeneous Porous Media

The value of the permeability in fluid flow through porous media is important for process investigation. In low Reynolds number, the classic Darcy’s law is suitable for simulation of fluid flow. In this paper, an experimental study for evaluation of preformed fiber permeability has been done. Also, the deviations from the classical Darcy law by experimental and numerical simulation of the N...

Comparison of Binomial and Power Equations in Radial Non-Darcy Flows in Coarse Porous Media

Analysis of non-laminar flows in coarse alluvial beds has a wide range of applications in various civil engineering, oil and gas, and geology problems. Darcy equation is not valid to analyze transient and turbulent flows, so non-linear equations should be applied. Non-linear equations are classified into power and binomial equations. Binomial equation is more accurate in a wide range of velocit...

Multi-scale high-performance fluid flow: Simulations through porous media

In petroleum production and engineering, the subsurface formation that surrounds the well screen gets, in many cases, deteriorated with time in relation to its hydraulic conductivity. As a consequence, well production declines with time and this limits to a large extent its efficiency. Since well installation is a major production operation that usually requires a large capital, it is always im...

The Research on the Biggest Borehole Curvature that Allowed through for the Rotating Casing (RESEARCH NOTE)

With the development of highly-deviated well cementing techniques, rotating casing cementing technology has got more and more attention. The rotating casing technique can improve the displacement efficiency of cement paste, and then enhance the quality of well cementation. In the stuck section, the rotating casing can redress the well to make the casing run sequentially. The casing endures shea...

Flow control of fluids through porous media

This paper discusses flow control of fluids through porous media, specifically related to its application in petroleum science. The flow of fluids is described by the Boussinesq equation with mixed boundary conditions; a Neumann boundary condition describes no flow at the outer boundary of the porous media and a nonlinear boundary condition describes the interaction between the porous media and...
